what an opportunity!
The Geleentheid Trust is a charitable organisation & registered NGO that awards scholarships to academically talented learners from the Stellenbosch, Paarl and Kuilsriver whose families cannot afford to attend leading schools in their communities.
We are currently – through individual donations – supporting 16 scholars in high school.
Our aim is to create transformation & community upliftment in the Winelands, starting with the building blocks of a good education.
A Group of Friends Making a Difference
The Geleentheid Trust was founded in 2008 by Michiel le Roux and Emile van Biljon. The idea originated from a late night conversation over a few beers, as they reflected on the invaluable opportunities afforded to them because they were able to attend top-performing, well-resourced schools.
Other friends joined the initiative and, since then, individuals who have joined the Trust have enabled it to grow into an NGO making real local impact throughout the Winelands.
21 Matriculants and Counting...
Since we provided our first scholarship in 2008, we have funded 21 scholars’ entire high school journey.
Many have done us proud, by continuing on to University, truly grasping the opportunities
that have come their way because of our scholarship.

How the Scholarship works
Academic Merit
We select scholars based on proven academic excellence, after several boot camps that we host for candidates during their Gr.6 and Gr.7 years.
We don’t just offer a seat; we reward hard work – and try to incorporate a holistic approach in selecting the scholarship recipients.
Financial Need
We provide assistance to families from our community where scholars show potential, but lack the resources and means to access top-tier education. The Winelands is home to some of the best schools in the country, and we help place some bright young talents in these schools.
An Ongoing Journey
We do not offer once-off scholarships and hope for the best. Following a journey of two years with several boot camps, we remain involved with the scholarship recipients. Monthly check-ins, communication with parents, and ongoing feedback and support is provided to ensure that the learners have the best chance to thrive.
Funding & Donations
Geleentheid Trust has been funded primarily by monthly debit order contributions of between R300 and R1500.
These donations come from our community members and Stellenbosch alumi. If you had the privilege of attending one of the top schools in the Winelands, consider paying it forward and getting involved with the Trust.
At less than R600 a month, 10 members can fund an entire scholarship.
Currently, we have around 50 members consistently supporting the Geleentheid Trust.
